Love opera? Like opera but can’t get to it easily? Might like it but not never been to a live performance? Wondering what all the fuss about? Well, Pop-up Opera is coming to us here in Thaxted on Sunday 9 July at 7.30, and it just might be the answer if you feel any of these ways about opera!
Pop-up Opera is an innovative professional touring company which delights in taking opera into unusual spaces. The glorious acoustics of Thaxted Church will be less of a challenge to them than some of the places they have performed in, which have included a scrap metal boat, a shaft beneath the Thames, and underground caverns. They use the performance spaces imaginatively; large screens make sure everyone can follow the story in English and no-one misses out on what’s happening.
The work they are bringing to us is Cimarosa’s Il Matrimonio Segreto (The Secret Marriage). It’s from the eighteenth century, and not that well known, so you definitely won’t be alone if it’s new to you. Full of comic confusions and intrigues, it’s perfect for a summer’s evening - full of wit, sparkle and fun. (When it was first performed, Leopold II was so delighted that he ordered an immediate repeat of the whole work - after supper had been served to the whole company!)
Pop-up Opera’s young, talented and versatile company of performers promise us a treat, and a new way of experiencing opera - don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity! Visit the Pop-Up Opera Concert Page for more info and to buy tickets online >
