Thaxted Festival’s new Artistic Director previews our 2018 season.
Welcome to Thaxted Festival 2018 season. Our Festival goes from strength to strength, and this will be my first opportunity as Artistic Director to satisfy and excite our devoted and truly supportive music lovers.
Following Gareth Stainer’s dedication to this task over the last twenty years might be daunting, but I have retained the genres which have underpinned recent Festivals, while continuing our philosophy of presenting some big names of the UK music scene with an emphasis on brilliant up-and-coming young musicians, local musicians and some perennial favourites, to give balance and flavour to the Festival.
There is a buzz of excitement surrounding the two concerts with the amazing instrumentalists Sheku Kanneh-Mason, BBC Young Musician of the Year 2016, and Freddy Kempf, an earlier winner of the award. The young musicians from the Junior Guildhall Orchestra thrilled us in 2016 and we are delighted to have them back this season. My own ‘find’ is the magical sound of Rodolfus, who promise a concert which will leave you in awe of the achievements of this young professional choir. Ronnie Scott’s is an enduring name in the world of Jazz performance and two of their house bands bring their unique talents to Thaxted. Folk music is strongly represented, as is the chance to hear works on our Lincoln Organ which you might not associate with it, while our Family Concert gives both children and adults the chance of a ‘Strictly’ experience!
Our final Gala concert will come hot on the heels of the World Cup Final. Could we possibly have double cause to celebrate the conclusion of our Festival? I believe we really have something for everyone in our 2018 season, and I look forward to seeing you in Thaxted!
